Governors' Profiles

Ellesmere College has a Governing Body consisting of the following members:


Steve White MBE (Co Opted Governor)

Steve was recently awarded an MBE for his service to Education and Sport in Leicester. Steve has 50+ years in Education and Sports Leadership and Administration. Steve started his teaching career in a school for pupils with Learning Disabilities in London in the mid 1960s. In the early 1970s moved back to Leicester as Head of Remedial and Diagnostic Services at Leicestershire High School. In 1980 Steve was appointed Deputy Head at KRIII Secondary School in Braunstone and in 1985 appointed to Rushey Mead Secondary School serving with distinction up to his retirement in 2002. Since official retirement Steve has served on a number of School Governing bodies and an Interim Executive Board including Abbey Primary, Leicester College and Gateway Colleges . Steve is currently at Fullhurst Community College and of course proudly Chair of Governors at the ever improving Ellesmere College! Steve loves sport both playing (mainly Table Tennis) and helping all types of groups when he can. Steve is particularly wedded to supporting Special Olympics in Leicester and helping prepare Athletes for Sheffield and the British Championships later this year. Steve is Chair of Directors of the School Development Support Agency and Director of AimStrongSport trying to find ways of developing Physical Literacy with and for our youth. Steve is very keen to forge links with India especially with the Rushey Mead Foundation School in Nagore in the state of Gujarat of which he is one of the co founders. Please feel free to contact Steve if you are interested in a role as a Governor at Ellesmere College.

Martin Bell (Co Opted Governor)

Martin has been a governor at Ellesmere for the last three years. He is Chair of the Finance Committee and also has an interest in the quality of teaching and learning. Martin also sits on the committees for Buildings, Site and Health & Safety and Strategic Development. His background is in education with a special focus on learning disabilities. He taught for almost twenty years at both the University of Leicester and Leicester College and now works as the Training Manager at the Volunteer Centre in the City. In his spare time he runs a drama group for adults with learning disabilities.


Roger Blackmore (Co Opted Governor)

Roger is the son of a Westcountry farmer who gained a degree in Social Sciences at Leicester University in the early sixties, He worked for a time as Training Officer for the Imperial Typewriter Company of Leicester and Hull before going on to work for 27 years at the Charles Keene College of Further Education in Leicester (now Leicester College). Roger was a member of Leicestershire County Council from 1993 to 1997 representing the Western Park Ward as a Liberal Democrat and was for a time Chair of Governors at the Leicester Adult Education College. Roger served as a member of Leicester City Council from 1995 until 2011. He was Leader of the Council between 2003 and 2007. He was Lord Mayor of Leicester from 2009 to 2010. Roger is also a Director of Clockwise Credit Union. A longstanding expert on education finance he has been a governor of Ellesmere College for many years frequently chairing the College's Resources Committee and sits on the Finance and Personnel Committee.

Richard Burt (Co Opted Governor)

Richard is one of the College's Premises Officers and he sits on the Buildings, Site and Health & Safety committee

Counsellor Kulwinder Johal (Co Opted Governor)

Alex Owen (Co Opted Governor)

Alex is a Chartered Accountant and currently the Finance Director at Remploy Limited but has historically worked within the finance department of a large charity of both Academies and Independent Schools. Remploy is an organisation that specialises in supporting individuals with a disability or work limiting health condition to obtain employment and currently has strong ties with Ellesmere College as its central office is based in Leicester. Being appointed as Co-opted Governor has allowed the relationship between Remploy and Ellesmere College to cement and has enabled Alex to share her experience of working within the education sector.


Philippa Berry (Co Opted Governor)

9th March 2015- 8th March 2019

Pip is the Priest in Charge at Holy Apostles Church on Fosse Road South. She has a background in education, having trained as a teacher, and taught in both this country and Nigeria. Pip was a Community Worker on Saffron Lane Estate before taking up her position at Holy Apostles, and in this role in the local parish church is able to combine her interest in the community and working with children and young people. She is often to be seen walking her dog on Aylestone Meadows!


Sally Donald-Deacon (Parent Governor)

9th March 2016- 8th March 2020

Sally is a parent governors for Ellesmere College with a son in the Primary department. Sally works for the NHS111 Service as a Health Advisor where she talks to members of the public, assesses them and sorts out the appropriate healthcare for them. Sally has been with the NHS111 Service for the last three years and thoroughly enjoys the job. Sally’s career history has always been within either the NHS or Social Services, where she worked her way up to being the PA for the Assistant Director of Derby City Social Services.
Sally grew up on the Isle of Wight, but now considers Leicester to be home. Sally enjoys crafting: card making, knitting, sewing and quilting as well as reading. Sally also has an allotment, where she more likely to be found with a cup of tea and nose in a book than with a gardening implement in her hand!

Linda Oakley (Associate Governor)

Linda Oakley, Strategic Resources Manager, has worked at Ellesmere College since 1995. Previously she worked at Greenacres Special School and Medway Infant School. Linda’s responsibilities within College are finance, admin, health and safety, human resources and buildings.  She attends the Finance and Personnel, Buildings, Site and Health & Safety committees, as an associate member of the governing body.
