English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Ellesmere College is an EAL (English as an Additional Language) Champion school.

At Ellesmere College we communicate in lots of different languages and in lots of different ways.

These include:

  • Speech
  • Written word
  • Objects of reference (using real objects like a cup to show it is juice time)
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
  • Makaton signing
  • BSL signing

Communication is also supported by:

  • Repetition
  • Oral rehearsal
  • Visual systems, including Widgit Symbols
  • Reduced language
  • Good models of speaking and listening
  • Giving students time to process and talk
  • Explanations of new and unfamiliar words
